Utilizing Critical Perspectives in Nonprofit Management Education: Implementation and Insights From an Online Course

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of utilizing critical pedagogy and perspectives in a course on nonprofit management. A description of the course and assessment approach is provided, followed by the results of a series of surveys and student reflections gathered from students electing to participate in this research project. Quantitative and qualitative results are presented from the various data collection tools, with insights into how each collection tool tells a unique story. The qualitative data provide insights into student engagement with the material and their appreciation for an alternative approach to learning how to manage nonprofit organizations.

Author Biography

Colton C. Strawser, University of San Diego

Colton C. Strawser is a doctoral research assistant in The Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego where he is also a student in the Ph.D. in Leadership Studies program. In addition, he has served as a visiting faculty member at Arkansas Tech University. His research interests include community engagement within higher education, the community leadership roles of community foundations, and effective pedagogy within the disciplines of nonprofit management and philanthropic studies. His mission is to empower organizations to create change through his teaching, scholarship, and engagement.

Reversion of Rights

Retention of Rights for Scholarly Purposes
