Author Biographies

Asiah Allen, Old Dominion University

Asiah Allen is NOLS field instructor in addtion to being a NOLS in-town transportation and outfitting manager. She earned her B.A. from Virginia Wesleyan University with a focus on Recreation Therapy. Asiah Allen earned her M.S. in Park, Recreation, and Tourism from Old Dominion University. Her research includes: youth development, outdoor education, and self-determination for diabetes management. She also has experience as a rock wall instructor for youth in a behavioral healthcare facility located in Portsmouth, VA. Asiah is also a Certified Theraputic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). 

Alexander Bitterman, Old Dominion University

Alex Bitterman is an undergraduate at Old Dominion University in the Park, Recreation, and Tourism major. He is also an active memebr of the ODU chapter of the College Diabetes Network.

Daniel Kling, Old Dominion University

Daniel Kling is an undergraduate at Old Dominion University who is an active member of the ODU chapter of the College Diabetes Network.

Eddie Hill, Old Dominion University

Dr. Eddie Hill is an associate professor in the Park, Recreation and Tourism Studies program. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Utah (2004) with a focus on Youth Development. Eddie Hill earned his B.S (1995) and M.S.Ed. (1998) from Old Dominion University. His focus was on teaching students with learning and behavior disorders. His research interests include: youth development, resiliency-based after school programming, motivation for diabetes management, therapeutic recreation, and outdoor education. He has written multiple grants, published many research papers, and given numerous presentations at professional conferences, all of which targeted positive youth development. Dr. Hill has 20 years experience as a ropes course facilitator, Outward Bound field staff, and educator. He is also a Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP).
