Abstract

In recent years, Arts Education in America’s secondary schools has been underfunded, undervalued, and underdeveloped. Music, in particular, has been under siege in the No Child Left Behind  era as teachers increasingly teach students to pass specific written tests, and administrators  focus on improving these test scores and struggle with related funding issues. Jurisdictions all across the United States are reducing music classes and eliminating music programs. In this environment music teachers are underappreciated and underutilized and worry about their uncertain future in American education. This lack of support for Arts education is particularly worrisome as myriad evidence has emerged supporting, validating and often proving the effectiveness of artistic involvement in developing youth.
