Embracing the D

Abstract

To most people in my profession of Special Education, the D  means disabilities . At The Lab School of Washington, the D  means different  - learning different ly and teaching different ly. Sally Smith, the founder of our school, had this uncanny ability to see things in her staff that they could not (or were not ready to acknowledge). The year I graduated from her graduate program at American University, Sally offered me a fulltime position in the elementary science department. I kicked, screamed, and pouted a bit. After all, I held a Bachelor’s in Fine Art and a Master’s in Special Education: Learning Disabilities, not  science. I was disinterested in the subject and frankly, found it quite boring.
