Abstract

Sally L. Smith had a clear vision of how she thought speech and language services should be integrated into her school. It was Sally’s idea that language therapists should work individually with students to help them make gains in their particular areas of need, as well as to work collaboratively with the teachers, artists, music teachers, drama teachers, social workers, occupational therapists, and other professionals who provide services to her children. This dual approach of individual pull-outs and integrated teaching was, and in many ways still is, a novel and unique aspect of how speech and language services are provided at the Lab School of Washington. It is a major reason why many of the Speech/Language Pathologists (SLPs) on staff at Lab have stayed on for as long as we have.
