Abstract

The Chinese have an expression, May you live in interesting times. For those of us who work in the field of Specific Learning Disabilities, the present time may almost be too interesting. Even after 30 years in the field, I continue to be amazed at the number of challenging issues we face. But none is more important than now, when potentially our very existence is seemingly at stake. No other area of special education experiences so much controversy. Yet, we always seem to emerge stronger from it, and I hope that again will be the case. There is an Irish proverb, Better to be quarreling than lonesome, and while we may quarrel, we are not lonesome because we have become the leader in special education, and I am certain that we will continue to hold that position. As goes Specific Learning Disability, so goes special education.
