Abstract

An interview of 12 caregivers of African American children with mild disabilities from a large midwester city was conducted in order to obtain information on their views and experiences with needs and services provided for families of children with mild disabilities. Results revealed interesting information regarding most frequent and most helpful services received (free food services, 830/0), most common concerns (curriculum and instructional needs, 33%), and services that had not been helpful (tutoring, 75%). The most frequent response regarding advice for teachers who provide services to students with disabilities was increasing teacher involvement with students (75%) and advice for families of individuals with disabilities was seeking out the best schools and special education programs (41 %).
