Abstract

There has been a tremendous increase in the number of students with learning disabilities entering postsecondary education over the past three decades. Unfortunately, a significant proportion of these students experience difficulty making the transition into higher education. Many experts attribute these difficulties to the significant differences between high school and postsecondary educational settings, including differences in rights and protections under federal legislation. This article provides a summary of literature-derived recomo1endations for parents and educators working with college-bound students with learning disabilities. The article includes an overview and discussion of three major transition models (i.e. ~ the Higher Education Transition Model, the Transdisciplinary Transition Model, and a comprehensive five-year model) as they relate to a best practices approach to the transition process.
