Abstract

In 1985, the Health Research Extension Act was passed by Congress and enacted into law (Public Law 99-158). This act mandated the establishment ofa Federal Interagency Committee on Learning Disabilities (rCLD) which was charged with the task of making specific recommendations to increase the effectiveness ofresearch in learning disabilities. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) within the National Institutes ofHealth (NIH) wasselected by ICLD to lead this scientific effort.
