Abstract

In 1940 Sam Kirk wrote an influential book entitled, Teaching Reading to Slow-Learning Children. In the book's forward, Marion Monroe states, Instead afwaiting until children have actually failed to learn to read, educators are now looking for early indications of difficulty and are changing emphasisfrom corrective to preventive work in reading (Monroe, 1940, p. iv). In my opinion, this advice written 57 years ago is highly relevant for guiding educational intervention for students with learning disabilities.. There is still considerable concern that individuals with learning disabilities are identified too late, after significant failure in reading and other related academic problems have already been well established. This situation is inexcusable given the well documented evidence of early indicators of reading failure (e.g., Wagner & Torgesen, 1987) available to us today.
