Abstract

Working memory seems to be an area of concern in all populations with cognitive disorders. This article addresses the possibility that working memoryis the most vulnerable component ofthe cognitive system. It is the site at which cognitive dysfunction becomes evident rather than the source of dysfunction per se. The ways in which various cognitive problems might manifest themselves as working memory problems are discussed. Typical learning disability problems are considered as coping mechanisms. The issue ofthe appropriate level of intervention is discussed in light of systems theory.
