Using Proactive Behavior Management Techniques to Facilitate School Success for Students with Learning Disabilities

Abstract

This article focuses on proactive techniques that have proven effective in controlling the misbehavior ofstudents with learning disabilities in both regular and special education classrooms. Highlighted are three major categories of alternatives for handling misbehavior: (a) preventative planning techniques, (b) anticipatory response techniques, and (c) systematic interventions. Emphasized are preventative planning techniques since misbehavior in most settings can be prevented from occurring. Such techniques are the easiest to teach to others and do not require a great deal of time, effort, and training. Specific preventative planning techniques, including teacher movement, social modeling, attention and approval, and rules, are described in detail. Vmous anticipatory response techniques and brief descriptions of some systematic interventions are additionally inclUded.
