Abstract

This study comparedthe performance ofa sample of38 college students with learning disabilities on the StanfordBinet Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (S-B:4) and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised(WAIS-R). Results indicated that the S-B:4 had generally significant positive relationships with the WAIS-R IQs. The S-B:4 Verbal Area SAS did not relate significantly to the Perfonnance IQ(PIQ) oftheWAIS-R. Moderate correlations were found between the corresponding subtests ofthe two batteries. On average, SAS scores ofthe S-B:4 were 3.14 to 6.37 points lower thanWAIS-R IQs. Further analysis revealed that the present sample showed considerable within subject variability on the S-B:4. Fifty-two percent of the subjects exhibited three or more differences of 11 points or greater between pairs of the S-B:4 area scales. A particular S-B:4 area score pattern characterized by high Verbal Reasoning paired with low Quantitative and Short-teon Memory scores was noted for a majority of the subjects in the present sample. Implications of the findings are discussed.
