Abstract

Persons using wheelchairs for mobility become involved in complex daily, vocational and sports-related movement activities. Limited research is available to provide knowledge concerning the motor control ofwheelchair assisted actions. Wheelchair tennis is one ofthe finest examples of efficient coping of persons with disabilities with complicated motor tasks. In order to gain primary insight into cognitive strategies utilized by experienced wheelchair tennis players, qualitative methodology was selected. A series of in-depth interviews was conducted with 13 wheelchair-tennis players who provided verbal statements. These were qualitatively processed using the method of analytic induction. A system of 12 categories has been generated and logically classified into two main task categories referring to positioning on court, and to striking. The relevance ofthese categories to a structural model of processing resources and its possible implications to the practice of wheelchair sports are discussed.
