Developing an Alternative Model of Special Education Service at the Secondary Level: From Tutoring to Teaching Independence

Abstract

The tutorial or basic skills model is still used in many secondary Resource Rooms. In recent years, the effectiveness ofthese methods has been seriously questioned. An alternative model which can be adapted for existing Resource Rooms and which promotes the teaching ofindependence is presented. Dataon student, parent, and classroom teacher assessment ofstudents' learning skills, responsibilities, and independence are presented.
